About This Image
The images of the opposite faces of Mars were taken as the planet reached its closest approach to the Earth in almost 60,000 years, on Aug. 23, 2003. The left image shows dark, circular impact craters. The right image shows the giant volcano Olympus Mons, an oval-shaped feature just above the center.
